About me

Hi!
I'm Ry, a queer 30 year old software engineer and game developer living in Germany.

Some terms that describe me:
  • nonbinary
  • queer
  • kinky
  • (gray) asexual
  • autistic
My politics:
  • trans rights are human right
  • free palestine
  • fuck capitalism
  • wear a mask
Face of a gray cartoony anthropomorphic cat with green eyes sticking out their tongue.
The background is the nonbinary flag: Horizontal stripes of yellow, white, purple and black.

Most of my spare time goes into game development, primarily Fireteam Nexus.
Photography is my offline hobby.

Feel free to follow me on Mastodon/Fediverse or itch.io!

Reading

August 2024

I used to absolutely devour books well into my teens and then just stopped and never picked it up again.
Happy to finally report two exceptions to that:

"Unmasking Autism", Dr Devon Price
Tough reading. Oops. (It's a really good book. It just hits a bit too close to home, at times.)

and for some whiplash
Human Domestication Guide
Highly surprising to see the queer kinky enby getting into this, I know
Perturbance stood out, really enjoyed that one.
Still got a lot more queued up and I'll probably update this!

Web Dev

August 2024

This website is built using Astro.
I originally started out by building my own static site generator in Rust using Handlebars templates, but the templating pissed me off too much.
I'm not 100% happy about Astro either, though it's pretty great in general. Something simple as controlling image file names is a ton of work and ends up bypassing the build cache. Ah well.

Game Dev

Godot

August 2024

I started using Godot at version 3.2 and made some smaller 2D games.
I took a single look at the 3D workflow and capabilities and immediately decided it was entirely unsuitable for that.
Luckily, that changed with Godot 4!
I made a game in one of the alpha versions and later completed a 7DFPS jam with a stable release. I've also fully switched over to C# - nothing wrong with GDScript, but I really need an actual IDE once a project gets larger.

Unreal Engine

August 2024

Made quite a few games in Unreal, though I stopped using it shortly after its 5.0 release. It's a massively powerful engine and I do dearly miss various things.

Ultimately stopped using it because:
  • it does not scale down to solo devs
  • I despise C++
  • I'm really quite uncomfortable about Epic

General

November 2023

Quite enjoying Rust.
Nicely fills the gap for small native tools where I'd usually have relied on some scripting language.

Cooking

August 2024

I quite enjoy cooking - gets me away from the keyboard and lets me use my fingers for something tangible for once.
I really should put a recipe book on this site
